A R T ART ART
My art study this quarter is broken into two different sections; Interdisciplinary Arts and Gallery Internship. My Gallery Internship is just taking off, because I’m still figuring out all the details. I’ve only met with Susan once so far, to work on taking down her installation for about two hours.
Journal entry after working with Susan for the first time:
“yesterday, i broke china.
i swept the shards out of the cracks in the floor.
breaking china is
alarming.
it is hard to break what’s already so
fragile.
she told me that you get used to the sound.
and after a while,
i forgot
just what the silence sounded like.”
Working with Susan is wonderful. Her work is very inspiring to me, and I deeply appreciate her welcoming me into her studio and working very closely to her work. Because this study is so new, there isn’t a whole lot that I can talk about yet. But even from the two hours that I was with her, I feel like I’ve already learned a lot. I’ve learned that even when you don’t know what you’re doing, or question whether you’re good enough to be doing something, you have to just dive right in, because chances are the only way to improve is by doing the thing that scares you. For me, this means learning about i-movie, or finding out what size poster would be best for advertising, or even the simple things like what is the best way to take down the window curtain. I look forward to working more with Susan throughout the rest of the year.
I AM ALSO LEARNING HOW TO CREATE DIGITAL ART + GRAPHIC DESIGNS
My interdisciplinary art study this year is mainly focused on graphic design. I have a lovely mentor; Sian Foulkes, who I meet with bi-weekly for two hours each session. It has been really helpful for me to get feedback on my work, and see what an afternoon for a local graphic designer looks like. Growing up in Vermont where I’ve never been exposed to too many artistic careers, I feel like I’ve been in the dark for a while now. This is really opening my eyes to the hidden artists around me and giving me hope and inspiration that perhaps I could have a career later in life, similar to theirs. One of the biggest things I’ve learned from Sian so far, is that it is OK to experiment and take time to learn and play around with the adobe suits. I came to her feeling a little intimidated at first, wanting to be really good right away. Sian has reminded me that a big part of getting to an artistic career, is using this time that I have now to try new things, to mess around, to see what works and what doesn't.
