CIVIC LITERACY:
Understand and participate in a democratic society.

This project is really helping me ask better questions.
This is a great way to really narrow down what you specifically want to learn.
Especially with projects that are so broad and include so much different information, identifying what you want to learn in question form is so very helpful.

After this initial brainstorm, I decided that looking critically + creatively at objects is something I want to spend a lot of time on
I am creating a book throughout the year to document all of this learning and all of my thoughts on objects: it is called "OBJECTS ARE HAPPENING"
-why they are important to our culture
-why they are important to our psychology
-what meaning they hold

THIS QUARTER, I HAVE TAKEN A LOT OF TIME TO ORGANIZE AND ARTICULATE HOW I WANT THIS BOOK TO BE FORMATTED,, CLICK BELOW TO SEE THE OVERVIEWS I DRAFTED UP::
Throughout the rest of my Senior year, I will continue to work on this project, and in the end, I hope to have one finalized handmade book that I can show as a product of all my learning around this subject.
BOOK LIST:
THIS SEMESTER I'VE ALSO BEEN READING THE BOOK: "THE GIFT" BY LEWIS HYDE!
It is all about the power of gifts in our culture and economy, and I'm reading it because it ties into the study of objects as gift giving is a main aspect of how we receive material culture.
IN SEMESTER TWO, I HOPE I WILL BE DIVING INTO SOME NEW BOOKS/ART/PIECES OF TEXT TOO:
- "IN SMALL THINGS FORGOTTEN" BY JAMES DEETZ
- "DARYL" BY CAMILLE CASMIER
Both of which are about the study of objects in our culture + in our world.
ART THERAPY:
ART THERAPY IS A LITTLE TANGENT IN MY PSYCHOLOGY PROJECT THAT I EXPLORED AT THE START OF THE SECOND SEMESTER IN PILOT THIS YEAR:
I had the wonderful opportunity to interview a local 'art therapist' and 'play therapist' and learn more about this type of therapy and her own personal experience in this field.
I also did some additional research on the roots of art therapy and learned about how it emerged from WW1 and was deeply intertwined with PTSD from the soldiers coming home from the war.
