Q & A
1. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THE PILOT?
I joined the program halfway through Sophomore Year and continued in the program until the end of Senior year. So I have done independent learning for 2 and a half years!
2. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO JOIN THE PILOT?
- A chance to have more artistic opportunities than otherwise offered at my high school, such as internships, chances to work one-on-one with a mentor, be a part of my artistic community both inside and outside of the school walls.
- To be a part of the creative and kind Pilot community! There are so many amazing students who are passionate about what they do and what they are learning about in the Pilot which makes is a really inspiring community to be a part of.
- An opportunity to study topics that aren't offered at my high school, such as Italian, graphic design, social justice topics, etc.
- To develop independent learning skills! I believe that learning is a life long journey and that developing skills to learn independently and study what you're really passionate about instead of just what you're told by your school you need to take is an important step in becoming a well rounded citizen.
3. HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU SPEND DOING PILOT WORK EACH WEEK?
In the Pilot you are required to log at least 4 hours of work weekly for each individual study you are doing. I create calendars and logs to make sure that I meet this requirement each week.
4. WHERE DO YOU COMPLETE ALL OF YOUR PILOT WORK?
U-32 High School has an entire classroom dedicated to Pilot students where everyone has their own personal desk area. This is where I do most of my pilot work because it is an inspiring and focused space. I also do quite a bit of my Pilot work from my house or if I'm meeting with a mentor I might go directly to their workspace.
5. WHEN DO YOU WORK ON YOUR PILOT STUDIES?
It really varies depending on my academic schedule as well as my outside-of-school schedule and how busy I am. Typically I will spend one to two hours working in the Pilot room a day, and then I will find time outside of school to do work whenever I have a free moment.
6. HOW DOES GRADING WORK IN THE PILOT?
Our content advisors are in charge of assessing our work and giving us our final grades. Students are required to meet with content advisors every other week for a half an hour to show all the work we've been doing and get feedback about how we can continue to meet all the standards we are trying to meet in our study.
7. WHERE CAN I FIND ALL YOUR WORK FROM PILOT?
All my work from Sophomore, Junior, and Senior year is documented right here on this website as well as in my content documentation folders (content advisors should look here: in the pilot google drive)
